2. DEVELOPING YOUR PROPOSAL

CONCEPTUALISATION AND REGISTRATION
Decide on an area of study and link up with a supervisor
If you need help finding a supervisor, contact the Postgrad Office. The ALR will assist you in finding a supervisor.
Complete a concept sheet with the assistance of your supervisor

Submit the concept sheet to Postgrad Office and complete a registration form in the Office.
If you do not possess a Masters degree, you need to submit a letter requesting recognition of prior learning. Click here for details.
As soon as your concept and application have been approved, you will be registered and you will be informed.
DEVELOPMENT OF A PROPOSAL
Develop your proposal with the assistance of your supervisor
If recommended to do so, register for our online Research Methdology module. In the course of taking the module, you will be guided through the development of your own individual proposal.
You have a maximum of 6 months in which to submit your proposal, following which you will have to apply for an extension in order to do so.
When you and your supervisor are satisfied with the first version of your proposal, submit an “intention to defend proposal” to Postgrad Office. This may not be later than 5 months after registration.
You and your supervisor will then be invited to a meeting where you will present your proposal. The audience will provide you with advice, ideas and constructive criticism
You will then refine your proposal to your and your supervisor’s satisfaction.
SUBMISSION OF PROPOSAL AND ETHICS
Complete one of the following ethics application forms:
BREC (biomedical research ethics committee): for all biomedical research
Humanities ethics committee: research on human subjects in the fields of education, social sciences, psychology etc.
Take careful note of the following
If your research includes a clinical trial, you need to have completed a Good Clinical Practice course before you submit your BREC application. Click here for details.
If your research takes place within a provincial hospital, you need the additional permission of the Department of Health ethics committee. Click here for details.DEVELOPMENT OF A PROPOSAL

  1. Develop your proposal with the assistance of your supervisor.You have a maximum of 6 months in which to submit your proposal, following which you will have to apply for an extension in order to do so.

  2. When you and your supervisor are satisfied with the first version of your proposal, submit an “Request for a Defence” to Postgrad Office. This may not be later than 5 months after registration.
