3. SUBMITTING YOUR PROTOCOL

When your protocol is complete, proceed as follows.

  1. Complete one of the following ethics application forms:

    For all biomedical research:

    BREC (Biomedical Research Ethics Committee)
    Click on the link to access essential information and download the form.

    For research on human subjects in the fields of education, social sciences, psychology etc

    Human Sciences Ethics
    Click on the link to access essential information and download the form.

  2. If your research includes a clinical trial, you need to have completed a Good Clinical Practice course before you submit your BREC application.

  3. If your research takes place within a provincial hospital, you need the additional permission of the Department of Health ethics committee. You may apply for this at the same time that you hand in your protocol to Postgrad Office.

  4. If your research involves the study of UKZN students, staff or intellectual property (such as student admission data, examination results, staff records etc), you may need the additional permission of the Registrar.You may apply for this at the same time that you hand in your protocol to Postgrad Office.

  5. Having attended to the above, submit your protocol and the relevant ethics application and supporting documents  to Postgrad Office.

  6. You will be notified by the relevant ethics committee of the outcome of your application. In most cases you should expect to receive queries or requests for amendment. Attend to these as soon as possible and resubmit via Postgrad Office.



You may not commence your actual study until you have final ethics clearance. To do so is regarded in a serious light.
