Academic Programme

With effect from 3 February 2012, there will be a weekly academic day meeting of registrars and consultants.


  • Venue: KGV student seminar room.
  • Friday morning from 07h30 to 08h30
  • CPD accredited
  • 80% attendance required for consultants and registrars within the Durban Functional Region
  • Light refreshments will be provided.



JOURNAL CLUB  (WEEK 1 OF THE MONTH) – Coordinator: Prof JK Burns       

  • At least 3-8 articles must be chosen in consultation with and under supervision of the allocated consultant.
  • The presenter should review all issues of the specified journal/s for the previous 12 months and identify articles of interest or importance.
  • A synopsis of the paper is to be presented
  • Do not read highlighted excerpts off the original
  • Do summarize the main findings of the paper in your own words.     
  • Technical details and fine aspects of methodology and statistics must be fully understood by you and a summary presented.
  • You should be able to clearly explain and respond to any questions.
  • The total presentation should not be longer than 2 – 3 pages (10 minutes) per article
  • At the end of your presentation, state:
  • Why you presented the paper
  • Give a brief criticism (good or bad) – do only merely quote what the paper states about the strengths and limitations of the study; focus on clinical issues as well as research methodology.
  • What you have learnt from article / the relevance / value of the contents, especially to psychiatric practice in South Africa.
  • A (5-10) point summary of the main findings of the paper could be drawn up and copies distributed to all.
  • The use of audio-visual aids will enhance the impact of your presentation.



  • Registrars to present interesting cases for discussion
  • Consultants rostered to chair and lead discussion


 RESEARCH FORUM  (WEEK 3 OF THE MONTH) – Coordinator: Dr S Mashaphu

  • Registrars and consultants (and others) to present research protocols, progress, results, report-backs from conferences, practice conference presentations, etc
  • Brief presentations on various aspects of the research process will be included at some meetings
  • Consultants will be rostered to chair and lead discussions



  • Registrars to present on topics
  • A Powerpoint presentation of no more than 10 slides should be prepared
  • Presentations 30 mins maximum); discussion 15 mins; summing up 5 mins
  • The scope of the presentation must be a succinct overview of the essentials of the topic as well as an update on recent developments and controversial issues.
  • Each seminar will be evaluated by 3 consultants using a standardised scoring form  – the registrar with the highest score over the year will win a prize for Best seminar presentation of the year.
  • Supervisors will be allocated per seminar. The role of the supervisor is to provide guidance during preparation, and to provide final summing up at the time of presentation.
  • Topics are on a recurring basis over a 24 month cycle and will cover important topics in Psychiatry at Fellowship level.    
  • Following the seminar, a typed, referenced and edited manuscript must be compiled in conjunction with the supervisor; (minimum 5 A4 pages, double spaced, Font 11 or 12.) Within 2 weeks of presentation of the seminar, this manuscript must be emailed to Ms Khanyile ( The manuscripts will be collated into a Book which has effectively been written by the registrars.

NB: This is not a reading session or meant to cover exhaustive content. Rather, the purpose is to highlight pertinent / controversial / challenging or current aspects of the topic and to stimulate active discussion and participation by all.
