UKZN Health Sciences Community Assists Xenophobia Victims
UKZN medical students and staff teamed up with representatives of the South African Medical Association (SAMA), the Islamic Medical Association and Doctors, to assist victims of the xenophobia violence at emergency camps in Phoenix near Durban. The team, led by UKZN’s Family Medicine Specialist and KZN SAMA Chair, Dr Mergan Naidoo, donated blankets, clothes and food.
GirlzNetwork Launched by UKZN Student
Fourth year medical student and winner of the 2014/15 Miss UKZN title, Ms Nompumelelo Nkosi, runs GirlzNetwork, an organisation that aims to groom and unite girls to become leaders, ambassadors and to promote change they want to see in their communities. GirlzNetwork wants to create a mentorship relationship with girls from different communities and get them involved in community outreach programmes.
UKZN Medical Students Assist on Health Day
First, second and fourth year Medical students together with their final year Dentistry colleagues screen people for diabetes mellitus, hypertension, TB, and HIV and provide education on oral health and general hygiene practices as their contribution on Health Day. Health Day community outreach initiative for Mayville and Cato Manor communities. The students work in collaboration with the NGO, iThemba Lethu, the UKZN HIV/AIDS Programme and the Dentistry Discipline of UKZN’s Westville campus to deliver a quality service to the community.
Community Engagement activities
The Skills Lab also offers its resources (equipment and staff) to our students, who then provide HIV Awareness and first aid training to community clinics, schools and religious organisations.
