Elective application: International students

Do the following if you are a student studying medicine fulltime at a non-South African medical school (even if you are a South African citizen.)

Step 1

Send an email to our Electives Office with the following details:

  • Your name and contact details
  • Your nationality
  • Name of your university (including city and country) and years of registration.
  • How many years of formal, full-time clinical training you have received
  • The elective(s) you would like to apply for, in order of preference
  • Requested duration of the elective in weeks, and proposed starting date or dates.

You may apply for more than one elective. As a rule you will only be accepted for an elective in a single department, but you may request to split your elective visit between two departments if you wish.

We will then reply to you with further information, including a list of suggested accommodation list, and will supply you with an application form if appropriate.

Step 2

You will need to send the following to the Electives Office:

  • Completed application form
  • Letter of recommendation from the University at which you are studying
  • Your academic transcript
  • A copy of your identity card or the identity page of your passport.

Step 3

You will receive an email informing you of the outcome of your application. If we offer you provisional acceptance, you will need to do the following:

  • Make payment as instructed
  • Complete a registration form for the Health Professions Council of South Africa (Form 8, which we will send to you).

You will then need to send the following to the Electives Office:

  • Proof of payment
  • Completed HPCSA Registration form (Form 8)
  • Certified copy of your passport
  • Documentary proof of medical insurance (covering the cost of care for any illness, accident or emergency arising while you are in South Africa).
  • Proof of immunization against Hepatitis B and Covid-19.

Once all your information has been received, we will be able to confirm your acceptance.

Step 4 (on arrival)

  1. Report in person to the School Undergraduate Office (4th floor, main medical school building, Medical School, 419 Umbilo Road).
  2. Show your letter of acceptance and proof of identity.
  3. You will be welcomed and assisted to fill out an application form for your UKZN access card, which gives you access to UKZN facilities and the health care facilities associated with the School of Clinical Medicine.
  4. You will then be directed to the Access Card office where you will collect your card. You will have to pay a small fee for this in cash directly to the office.
  5. Return to the Undergraduate Office from where you will be directed to the Department you are visiting.
