The School of Clinical Medicine (SCM) in partnership with DoH has set up the UKZN INTERNSHIP COMMITTEE and INTERNSHIP MENTORSHIP SERIES. This partnership is supported by Investec. The Mentorship Series aims to support and guide KZN Interns with career guidance, working life orientation, financial, physical and mental wellness. This platform will also help forge relationships for interns to collaborate and support each other.
The monthly programme includes career guidance presentations from various medical and surgical disciplines, identification of mentors as well as wellness and financial planning for the young interns. This platform will create and establish access to the academic platform for those interns who would like to start preparing for research and part 1. This initiative is supported by all HOD’s in the School of Clinical Medicine.

This initiative is supported by all HOD’s in the School of Clinical Medicine. Interns who are already certain about pursuing specific specialities will be encouraged to attend academic meetings ,advised on the scope of work, which textbooks to buy, and be encouraged to prepare for part 1 of that speciality.
The programme will also include introductory research sessions to introduce the interns to postgraduate research at UKZN, so that interns who are keen on research can be linked with various researchers in the different disciplines. Interns who are keen to work as research assistants in any existing discipline projects, will also be encouraged to do so. Interns who are keen to start with MMedSci will also be encouraged and assisted to identify projects and supervisors for their specific areas of interest.
In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic we will use digital platforms to replace the face to face workshops and seminars. The development of an APP is also being explored with Investec.
