Professor Dean Gopalan, Head of UKZN’s Anaesthesiology and Critical Care discipline, was recently awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the College of Anaesthetists of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (CANECSA) at their first in-person graduation in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Gopalan has been instrumental over the last decade in helping colleagues from ECSA establish a separate College for Anaesthetists from across 11 countries in the region. He has also conducted numerous teaching and examiner preparation courses as part of their process. Additionally, he has been an examiner and moderator for their final FCA examinations, including their first in-person final examinations in Harare last week.
‘This is indeed a great honour to be recognised as an Honorary Fellow by peers at CANECSA. It has been a privilege working with colleagues from across the countries in the African region and seeing CANECSA come to fruition and qualify a new cohort of specialist anaesthesiologists for the continent,’ Gopalan said.
Gopalan is an active academic, clinician, researcher, teacher, and leader in the fields of anaesthesiology, critical care medicine and medical education.
