The Dean and Head of UKZN’s School of Clinical Medicine, Professor Ncoza Dlova, lauded a noble gesture initiated by the Medical Class of 2002 Reunion Committee.
The committee recently established a fund to assist fellow medical students through food parcel donations, especially benefiting students who fail from South Africa’s Quintile 1 and 2 schools which are declared no-fee schools and meant to be allocated a higher state subsidy than the affluent schools that are declared Quintile 4 and 5.
The decision to create the fund was to address an issue that often gets lost in aid to students,’ said Fourth-year Undergraduate Co-ordinator, Dr John Arnold, who championed the project.
The committee proposed that a food fund be created, and hopefully become a long-term legacy. ‘Many students often go to be bed hungry and yet are expected to perform well. Even we, as alumni remember times that we struggled,’ said Arnold. ‘It is hoped that the assistance with food will assist the beneficiaries in achieving their goals and become doctors,’ he said.
