Please note that studies involving UKZN students as study subjects or material belonging to UKZN (including student records and student data) require additional “gatekeeper” permission as follows.
1. WHERE THE OBJECT OF STUDY IS THE PROPERTY OF UKZN
This includes all educational studies, studies on the wellbeing of students, studies on student opinions, aspirations etc.
IN BOTH CASES PROCEED AS FOLLOWS
Permission is required from the Registrar.
- Submit a letter of request addressed to the Registrar, together with the completed protocol, to our Postgrad Office. They will forward it to the Registrar’s office, c/o Ms Sandy Ramsuroop (ramsuroops@ukzn.ac.za) and it facilitates matters if such requests are sent directly to her.
- You will receive a letter granting approval conditional on ethics approval being obtained. Similarly, any ethics approval you receive will be conditional on you receiving the Registrar’s permission.
You may not proceed until you have dual approval.
3. WHERE THE STUDENT’S ROLE IS MERELY THAT OF A “YOUNG ADULT” AND NOT THAT OF A STUDENT PER SE
This covers such cases as biomedical studies where student is selected as a readily available “young adults”, unrelated to the fact of their being students. In such cases the Registrar’s permission is not required, but you are required to obtain the Dean’s permission.
- Submit a letter of request addressed to the Dean, together with the completed protocol, to our Postgrad Office. They will forward it to the Dean’s office.
- You will receive a letter granting approval conditional on ethics approval being obtained. You may not proceed until you have dual approval from Ethics and the Dean.
